Miley Cyrus appeared on last week’s episode of Call Her Daddy alongside host, Alexandra Cooper, to promote the release of her first single and music video in almost a year, Midnight Sky. This duo shocked fans by joining forces in this highly anticipated episode. Bombshells were dropped left and right as Cyrus revealed the inspiration behind her new song, her “firsts”, and her current relationship status- spoiler: she’s single! Here’s a breakdown of everything we learned from the hour-long interview between the pop star and podcaster.
THE PUBLIC’S RESPONSE TO HER BREAKUP IS THE INSPIRATION FOR MIDNIGHT SKY
“It’s unfair that someone taking a photo from a helicopter is allowed to control my narrative”. Cyrus mentioned that this song is a way for her to build a bridge that was missing in her narrative. “This song is a gap between the public reception and the truth”. She also mentioned that as a woman she felt like she was villanized for moving on, unlike a lot of men in the industry who are praised for it. Cyrus stated that she would much rather the public villainize her for her sexuality rather than for accusing her of being disloyal.
MIDNIGHT SKY GOES AGAINST EVERYTHING WE KNOW ABOUT POP MUSIC TODAY
Cyrus revealed that she wrote Midnight Sky to be a “bisexual anthem” that plays with gender roles. She discussed how her lyrics refer to both men and women in a romantic way in order to normalize being attracted to both genders. This is no surprise to long-time fans of Cyrus as they know she has notoriously used her platform to support the LGBTQ+ community.
“I WAS ATTRACTED TO GIRLS WAY BEFORE I WAS EVER ATTRACTED TO GUYS”
The Midnight Sky singer revealed her early attraction to women and mentioned when watching movies growing up she always thought female characters in movies were way hotter than their male counterparts. She even revealed how she thought Minnie mouse was “super f*cking hot” when she was just 11 years old. Along with this, she confessed that the first person she ever hooked up with was a girl. “When I was around 11 or 12 my friends were starting to tell me what they were doing with guys, so I got most of them to hook up with me.” “The first time I ever hooked up with anyone was a girl, 2 of them.”
MILEY LOST HER VIRGINITY TO LIAM HEMSWORTH AT 16
One of the biggest bombshells to come out of this interview was the revelation that Miley lost her virginity to her eventual ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. “I didn’t go all the way with a dude until I was 16 and I ended up marrying the guy”. Cyrus and Hemsworth met on the set of The Last Song in 2009 and had an on again and off again relationship until their separation in 2019. Another shocker was when Miley revealed she had actually lied to Liam at the beginning of their relationship saying she’d lost her virginity to a friend in order to not “look like a loser”. It wasn’t until she was 24 when she had to come clean. “ I just made someone up that I had sex with and then his friend ended up marrying him so then when I was 24 I had to tell the truth but it was a lie I held on to for about 10 years”.
SHE’S BEEN IN LOVE 3 TIMES, ONCE WITH A GIRL
Although she’s been in love 3 times Miley divulged that one was greater than the rest. “ I’ve been in love more than I’ve ever been in love with anyone else one time”. She also revealed that one of the three was a woman. “ I’ve been in love with one person who is a girl that I still think about and dream about all the time”. Fans have speculated that this person is Katelynn Carter, the ex-wife of Brody Jenner. Carter and Cyrus’ relationship began in August 2019 after both of their splits from their husbands, when they were spotted making out on a boat in Lake Como. However, their relationship didn’t last long as news of the pair’s split circulated in September of that year.
MILEY’S CURRENT OUTLOOK ON LOVE AND HER RELATIONSHIPS
“I usually end up complaining that they’re boring but that’s what I need.” When Alex asked what Miley is looking for in a relationship she explained how she needs an anchor and someone who “brings more to the table than their plate”. Cyrus also revealed she’s currently looking for her next partner to be sober. “I get turned on by what people are contributing to my life. Right now having a partner who is also sober is very sexual to me.”
THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA FOR MILEY
Cyrus is known for her covers of classic songs but now she wants a classic song of her own. “I feel like I’ve been able to introduce my fans to music they may not already know, whether it’s sitting in this backyard covering Jolene for backyard sessions…”. She told Cooper how she wanted her new song to feel like it’s from the same era she pulls her inspiration from.
