To honnor the 30th anniversary of her debut album, Mariah Carey will be releasing a memoir on September 29, titled, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey” in print and on Audible.
The book will be written by Mariah Carey, herself, along with former Essence Fashion Editor, Michaela Angela Davis and will take a look at the singer and actress’ career and personal life from her perspective.
Carey announced the book on her Instagram, stating, “It took me a lifetime to have the courage and the clarity to write my memoir. I want to tell the story of the moments — the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the debacles and the dreams, that contribute to the person I am today.”
“This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival and my songs. Unfiltered,” Carey continued.
Fans have seen Carey achieve legendary success, such as $200 million in record sales, appearances in Academy Award winning films as well as winning many of awards over the years for her music. Fan’s have also witnessed the ups and downs of Carey’s personal life and the public scrutiny she has also faced.
“Writing this memoir was incredibly hard, humbling and healing. My sincere hope is that you are moved to a new understanding, not only about me, but also about the resilience of the human spirit,” she concluded in her announcement.
A statement announcing the book’s release date said, “Carey’s story is an improbable and inspiring journey of survival and resilience as she struggles through complex issues of race, identity, class, childhood, and family trauma during her meteoric rise to music superstardom. By pulling back the curtain on perceptions often told through the filtered lens of media, Carey bravely and beautifully walks through her battles with gender and power dynamics, emotional abuse, public embarrassments, personal failures, and phenomenal victories. While the book will be available in print on September 29, Audible will exclusively release the audiobook performed by Carey, as her words are interwoven with special musical components.
