Legendary actor James Earl Jones, known for his iconic voice and a career spanning more than six decades, passed away at 93. The beloved actor died on Monday at his home in Dutchess County, New York, surrounded by family, according to his agent Barry McPherson.

Jones, best known for voicing Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise, was a giant in the world of film, television, and theater. His distinctive deep voice helped bring to life one of cinema’s most memorable villains, but his talents extended far beyond that. Jones was celebrated for his diverse acting roles, earning him three Tony Awards, two Emmys, a Grammy, and an honorary Academy Award for lifetime achievement in 2011.

Born in Mississippi in 1931, Jones struggled with a severe stutter as a child, a challenge he learned to overcome with the help of a high school teacher who encouraged him to recite poetry. He later embraced silence as a tool for listening and reflection, which shaped his approach to acting.

Jones began his career on Broadway in the 1950s and 1960s, starring in productions like On Golden Pond and The Best Man. He won his first Tony Award in 1969 for The Great White Hope, where he played boxer Jack Jefferson, a role that also earned him his first Oscar nomination when the play was adapted for film in 1970.

In addition to his success on stage, Jones had a prolific career in television and film. He won two Emmy Awards in 1991 for his roles in Heat Wave and Gabriel’s Fire, and his powerful presence on screen made him a standout in films such as Coming to America, Field of Dreams, and The Lion King, where he voiced Mufasa.

Jones remained humble about his most famous role as Darth Vader, often referring to himself as simply a special effect. Despite his modesty, his voice became an integral part of Star Wars lore, delivering iconic lines such as “I find your lack of faith disturbing” and the unforgettable revelation, “No, I am your father.”

Throughout his career, Jones amassed nearly 200 acting credits, maintaining an impressive work ethic even into his later years. He reprised his role as Vader in several Star Wars projects, including Rogue One, The Rise of Skywalker, and the 2022 Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi.

In addition to his vast body of work, Jones left a lasting mark on Broadway. In 2022, the Cort Theatre was renamed the James Earl Jones Theatre in his honor, recognizing his enduring impact on the stage.

Jones was married twice, and his second wife, Cecilia Hart, passed away in 2016. He is survived by their son, Flynn Earl Jones. His legacy as one of the most versatile and respected actors in American history will continue to inspire future generations.
