A shooting occurred at former President Donald J. Trump’s rally in Butler, Pa., on Saturday evening, resulting in two deaths, including the suspected gunman, and two critically injured individuals. Here’s what we know about the incident.

The Incident

During the rally, a man fired multiple shots towards the stage, injuring Mr. Trump in the ear. The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pa., was killed by Secret Service agents. The Secret Service and F.B.I. are investigating the incident as an assassination attempt and potential domestic terrorism attack.

Trump’s Reaction

Mr. Trump was quickly escorted off the stage by Secret Service agents after the shots began. Despite being bloodied, he pumped his fist in a defiant gesture to the crowd. Later, he posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, describing the incident and his injuries.

The Shooter

Thomas Matthew Crooks fired from the roof of a warehouse about 500 feet from Mr. Trump. Crooks, who recently graduated from the Community College of Allegheny County, was employed at a nursing home and described as intelligent but solitary by former classmates. An AR-15-type semiautomatic rifle was found on his body, legally purchased by his father. Investigators also discovered three explosive devices connected to Crooks.

The Victims

The rally’s fatality was Corey Comperatore, 50, a married father of two who was fatally shot while trying to protect his family. David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, were critically injured and are in serious but stable condition at Allegheny General Hospital.

The Scene

The shooting occurred at the Butler Farm Show, where Mr. Trump was holding a large outdoor rally. Attendees screamed and took cover as the shots rang out. The Secret Service cleared the area and declared it a crime scene. Some attendees prayed and chanted “U.S.A.” after the incident.

The Investigation

Authorities are probing how the shooter managed to open fire in the vicinity of a presidential candidate. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas called the incident a security failure. The F.B.I. has searched Crooks’ home, car, and phone, conducted nearly 100 interviews, and received hundreds of digital media tips.

Local law enforcement snipers were present but did not deliver the fatal shot. A local officer attempted to neutralize the gunman but did not inflict the kill shot. Secret Service snipers ultimately killed the shooter.

Security Response

Representative James Comer issued a subpoena to Secret Service Director Kimberly A. Cheatle, who has taken responsibility for the security lapse but does not plan to resign.

This shocking event has raised questions about rally security and the measures in place to protect political figures. The investigation continues as authorities piece together the motives and methods behind the attempted assassination.
