For fans of the book series from Rick Riordan, “Percy Jackson and The Olympians Series,” get excited, because a television series is currently in development with Disney Plus.

Riordan’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series,” begin with The Lightning Thief, encompasses five novels and two follow-up series, “Heroes of Olympus” and “Trials of Apollo.” The story follows a young boy, named Percy Jackson, who discovers he is the son of Poseidon, and is soon enveloped in a world of gods and demi-gods.

Author, Riordan posted a video on his Twitter account announcing the new series along with statement, “Hey Percy Jackson fans, for the past decade, you’ve worked hard to champion a faithful on-screen adaptation of Percy Jackson’s world. Some of you have even suggested it would be a great series for Disney Plus. We couldn’t agree more! We can’t say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one. Rest assured that Becky & I will be involved in person in every aspect of the how. There will. be much more news in the future, but for now, we have a lot of work to do! Buckle up, demigods. It’s going to be a fantastic, exciting ride!”

Fans were pleased to find out that Riordan will be more involved in production this time around. Previously, “The Lightning Thief” as well as the second book in the series, “Sea of Monsters,” were adapted as feature films by 20th Century Fox, however they were not met with great reception.

Fans, whose readership rivaled that of Harry Potter, hoped for a series of films produced with the same quality as the Harry Potter films had been.

Riordan himself revealed in a lengthy 2018 blog post that during production, he attempted to “save” the first movie and even shared his emails to producers where he discouraged their attempts to “sex up” his books that were written for a very young audience.

Star of the original Percy Jackson films, Logan Lerman, took to Twitter to congratulate Riordan on the announcement from Disney, stating “Excited to see this! Hope it gets the adaptation the books deserve. Congrats @rickriordan.”

Following Lerman’s Tweet, fans took to Twitter to campaign for Lerman to return for the Disney series playing Poseidon.

While no casting decisions have been made yet, sources have stated that Disney plans to include Lerman in the project, likely as a cameo.

While no specific information has been released yet regarding production, it is clear that fans will be anxiously awaiting the project’s release.
