For fans of the Twilight Saga who have been missing the teen angst of human/vampire/werewolf love triangles, author, Stephenie Meyer just announced the release of a new book from the franchise, called “Midnight Sun,” set to release soon.
Fans were alerted that something new was in the works when Meyers’ personal website had a countdown ticking toward 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning, set against a dreamy night sky and a forest background, reminiscent of past “Twilight” imagery. When the countdown reached zero, fans learned the news that a new book, “Midnight Sun” would be releasing. With so many fans anxiously anticipating the news, the volume of fans apparently crashed the site.
Since the release of the first book, “Twilight,” in 2005, the saga has cultivated millions of fans worldwide. Three more books followed: “New Moon,” “Eclipse,” and “Breaking Dawn,” as well as an entire movie franchise, staring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. The franchise seemed to end with the release of the last film of the series in 2012, however that may be changing with the release of this new novel.
The original story of “Twilight” followed the supernatural romance between a handsome vampire, Edward Cullen, and human, Bella Swan. The story becomes complicated through intertwined issues between friends, family and werewolves. “Midnight Sun” is a contrast to earlier books, which were told from Bella’s perspective, and it has been announced that the new book will look back on Edward’s story and be told from his point of view.
The publisher for “Midnight Sun,” Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, said in its listing for the book. “As we learn more fascinating details about Edward’s past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle on his life. How can he let himself fall in love with Bella when he knows that he is endangering her life?”
Many fans were excited to see this novel come to fruition as the concept had been teased in the past as a possible project for Meyers. The novel had been in the works for years, initially functioning as a manuscript for actor, Robert Pattinson, to reference as he played the character of Edward.
Meyers stated on “Good Morning America,” “I am very excited to finally, finally announce the release of ‘Midnight Sun’ on August 4. It’s a crazy time right now and I wasn’t sure if this was the right time to put this book out, but some of you have been waiting for just so, so long. It didn’t seem fair to make you wait anymore. Sorry about the bad timing. Hopefully this book can be a distraction from the real world. I’m so excited to finally be able to share it with you.
“I thought seriously about delaying this announcement until things were back to normal, however, that felt wrong, considering how long those who are eager for this book have already waited.” She continued, “I know how much I personally need distractions right now, how much I need something to look forward to, and most of all, how much I need more books to read. So, I hope this book gives my readers a little pleasure to anticipate and, after it arrives, a chance to live in an imaginary world for a while.”
