From Stand-Up to Stardom: An Interview with Comedy Queen Cocoa Brown

Cocoa Brown has spent over two decades making people laugh, but her talents go far beyond stand-up comedy. From starring in hit TV shows like For Better or Worse to acclaimed roles in films like The Single Moms Club, Cocoa has proven herself to be a dynamic force in the entertainment industry. In this exclusive interview, she reflects on her career, the influences that have shaped her work, and the exciting new ventures she’s exploring.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in comedy, and how did your early experiences shape your comedic style?
A: A friend from college got me into stand-up, even though I was on a corporate career path. I wasn’t looking to be a comedian, but he saw something in me, and I ended up at an open mic. My mentor, Darcelle “The Fat Doctor” Blagmon, played a huge role in shaping my style. He taught me the craft—how to write and deliver jokes and how to find my voice.

Q: You’ve had a diverse career, from stand-up comedy to acting in television and film. How do you approach these different forms of performance? And do you have a favorite?
A: Stand-up is my therapy. I go on stage and leave everything out there. Acting, on the other hand, is about becoming the character—really living in the moment. I love both, but stand-up allows me to be free and express myself in a way that’s raw and immediate.

Q: “For Better or Worse” was a significant part of your career. What was it like working on the show, and how did the character of Jennifer resonate with you?
A: Working on For Better or Worse was an incredible experience. Over six seasons, I was able to evolve Jennifer beyond the “funny sidekick.” Tyler Perry gave me the freedom to add layers to her character—she became someone with depth, love, and heartache. Fans still call me Jennifer to this day!

Q: You’ve mentioned that you draw from personal experiences in your comedy. Can you share how your life story has influenced your work and connected with audiences?
A: My life is all over my comedy. From divorce to single motherhood, I talk about it all. I don’t hide anything from my audience, and they appreciate the authenticity. I think that’s why people feel like they know me—because they’ve seen me go through life’s ups and downs, just like them.

Q: Your performance in “The Single Moms Club” was praised. How did you prepare for that role?
A: That role hit close to home because I was going through a separation at the time, and I was about to become a single mother myself. Tyler Perry knew about my situation and told me to “use it” in my performance, which made the role even more personal and powerful for me.

Q: You have a bold fashion sense both on and off screen. How does your style influence your characters?
A: Fashion is a big part of who I am. Even when I’m following trends, I always add something uniquely me—whether it’s a piece of jewelry or how I style my hair. My characters reflect that too. For example, Jennifer on For Better or Worse had a new wig every episode, which made sense because she was a hairstylist.

Q: Fashion can be a powerful tool for self-expression. How has your style evolved over the years?
A: I used to be all about following trends in the ’90s, but now it’s about class and comfort. I’m still trendy, but I want my style to reflect maturity and confidence. It’s less about showing skin and more about showing who I am.

Q: As someone who has survived and thrived through life’s challenges, what advice do you have for others facing difficult times?
A: Sometimes, you have to let go and let God. Jesus has carried me through some tough times, and I’ve learned that you can’t control everything. Trust that better things are coming. You’ve made it through hard times before, and you will again. Keep the faith.

Q: You’ve worked with some iconic figures like Ryan Murphy and Tyler Perry. What have you learned from them?
A: Working with Tyler Perry, Ryan Murphy, and the late John Singleton has been an honor. I’ve learned that you need to be ready for anything in this industry. The doors that opened for me came because I was prepared. Jesus opened those doors, and I walked through them with confidence because I knew I had put in the work.

Q: Looking ahead, what are your aspirations, and tell us about your new podcast?
A: I’m venturing into writing, producing, and directing. My new podcast, Hey Auntie, is something I’m very excited about. I wanted to create a space for women of a certain age to embrace their wisdom and experience. It’s a love letter to all the “aunties” who are role models for younger generations.
