If you’ve scrolled through Instagram or Twitter at all in the last few months, you have probably seen a number of photos captioned: hot girl summer. This phrase, as well as a movement around the mantra, was popularized by rapper, Megan Thee Stallion, and according to Billboard, she is now in the process of trademarking “hot girl summer.”
With the rise of Megan Thee Stallion’s popularity, as well as release of her EP, Fever, hot girl summer was underway, as Megan took social media by storm. Many were inspired to adopt the phrase and the attitude, posting #hotgirlsummer all over Instagram and twitter. Many celebrities also took to social media using the phrase.
Jada Pinkett Smith was among the most notable to rep Megan Thee Stallion, posting to Twitter a photo of herself posing on a boat with glowing skin, captioned” I’ll take that joyful hot girl summer thank you.”
A fan interaction initially sparked the rumor of this trademark.
Responding to her own XXL Freshman Interview, Megan stated on Twitter, “I told y’all I’m taking this hot girl shit global.”
A fan responded asking, “global but r u trademarking it baby?”
Megan replied, “Yes Mam it’s been in the process.”
It is rumored that Megan’s request to trademark the phrase is with the intention to sell upcoming merchandise, such as hoodies, shirts and athleisure style clothing. The trademark was reportedly filed July 10 by Megan.
In addition to spiking in popularity due to her music, Megan Thee Stallion has been embraced by social media through her strategic and intelligent marketing moves, of which hot girl summer is an example of.
Many women in particular have taken to the concept, reposting the catchphrase and advocating for a season of fun and confidence.
When asked what exactly the phrase, “hot girl summer,” means, Megan responded via Twitter, “Being a Hot Girl is about being unapologetically YOU, having fun, being confident, living YOUR truth, being the life of the party etc.”
The hashtag #hotgirlsummer has so far been used over 170k times on Instagram, while “hot girl summer” has been used on Twitter 2 million times over the past month.
Many are attributing the widespread popularity of this phrase to its focus on confidence and body positivity, rather than leaning on conventional beauty standards, as Megan Thee Stallion is known for lyrics that are bold and that exemplify self esteem.
Megan explained to the Root, “it’s just basically about women — and men — just being unapologetically them, just having a good-ass time, hyping up your friends, doing you, not giving a damn about what nobody got to say about it. You definitely have to be a person that can be the life of the party and, y’know, just a bad bitch.”
