Royals, Prince Harry and Megan Markle, made the huge, and unheard of, decision to distance themselves from the Royal Family after months of dealing with the unfair portrayal of Markle in the British media.

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” the royals said on their Sussex Royal Instagram account.

While this decision seems to be positive, speculation as to what prompted it point to the dark side of the British media. While much of the world have been cognizant of Markle’s portrayal, the couple themselves have too, with many pointing to a statement from Prince Harry in October to be evidence.

“My deepest fear is history repeating itself. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces,” Harry said.

Prince Harry and Megan Markle, along with their son, have decided to also distance themselves geographically, planning to split their time between The U.K. and elsewhere. Regarding locations the couple considered, Africa seemed to be an option due to their philanthropic efforts in the area.

Harry told Tom Bradby in an interview, “I don’t know where we could live in Africa at the moment. We’ve just come from Cape Town; that would be an amazing place for us to be able to base ourselves, of course it would.”

This goal of living in Cape Town may be distant though, with Harry continuing, “but with all the problems that are going on there, I just don’t see how we would be able to really make as much difference as we want to without the issues and the judgment of how we would be with those surroundings.”

It is also rumored that the two may consider Canada, as Markle had previously lived in Toronto for six years while filming the show, “Suits.”

While it is unclear where the two will relocate to, the couple made it clear that they do intend to do so, stating “this geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”

The two continued, “we look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.”
