Natalie Portman shakes up Marvel by returning to the cinematic universe with her role as the first female Thor. At Comic-Con International, the new film, Thor: Love and Thunder, was announced, along with Portman’s casting as the lead.
This upcoming role is not the first time Portman has taken on the character, Jane Foster, in the Marvel universe. In 2013’s The Dark World Portman played Thor’s astrophysicist girlfriend. While this film was successful, at the time, it seemed as if Portman had no plans to return to the Thor franchise.
“As far as I know, I’m done,” Portman told The Wall Street Journal. “I mean, I don’t know if maybe one day they’ll ask for an Avengers 7 or whatever, I have no idea. But, as far as I know, I’m done. It was a great thing to be a part of.”
The rumored reason for the Oscar winning actor’s absence from the following Thor film was due to disagreements between she and director, Patty Jenkins. This rumor, however, was never confirmed by Portman or Jenkins.
Portman clearly reconsidered her stance of being “done” with the Thor franchise, which Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige told CNN had everything to do with the chance to work with director, Taika Waititi.
“We love the story — it’s one of the best comic runs recently,” Feige said. “I think when [Waititi] agreed to come back and do another Thor, he was like, ‘How do we-?’ This is a very big movie that’ll be folding in a lot of elements.”
He continued, “[Waititi] pitched it to us, and we were totally in. We loved it. We’d been in touch with Natalie. She’s part of the MCU family and we put she and Taika together. It took one meeting and she agreed to do it.”
Waititi directed the wildly successful Thor: Ragnarok film which ultimately lead Marvel to green-light another Thor film, making Thor the first hero to receive a fourth film in the Marvel cinematic universe.
As far as the plot for Thor: Love and Thunder, much is unknown to the public. The only information known is that at some point, Portman’s character, Jane Foster, will be deemed worthy enough to wield Thor’s iconic hammer. However, Tessa Thompson, who plays Valkyrie, recently revealed that her character will be looking for her Queen of Asgard in the upcoming sequel.
Thor: Love and Thunder will hit cinemas on November 5, 2021.
