Stranger Things star and beauty brand owner, Millie Bobby Brown, has been in the public eye since she was a child, and now she is celebrating her 16th birthday by reflecting on the unique challenges of growing up in front of an audience.

Brown took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a video montage that showcased her career and the juxtaposition of negative and positive influence on her life from the public. Throughout the two minute video, which was set to the song, “Changes,” by Justin Bieber, footage of Brown signing autographs and attending red carpets and award shows were inter-spliced with images of negative headlines aimed at the young actor.

Alongside the video was a lengthy caption from Brown, reflecting on the recent years, specifically calling out the insecurities she has had to overcome regarding her sexualization at such a young age in the media.

Brown wrote, “16 has felt like a long time coming. i feel like change needs to happen for not only this generation but the next. our world needs kindness and support in order for us children to grow and succeed.”

The actor continued, “the last few years haven’t been easy, I’ll admit that. there are moments i get frustrated from the inaccuracy, inappropriate comments, sexualization, and unnecessary insults that ultimately have resulted in pain and insecurity for me. but not ever will i be defeated. ill continue doing what i love and spreading the message in order to make change.”

Brown ultimately calls to her experience as a learning opportunity for not only herself but others when it comes to perseverance.

Many other celebrities reached out to Brown on social media in support including, Yara Shahidi, Bella Hadid, Noah Cyrus, and even Octavia Spencer who praised Brown for showing “tremendous poise in this business that has such built in scrutiny.”

She concluded her statement, “let’s focus on what needs changing and I hope this video informs you on the things that go on behind the scenes of the headlines and flashing lights. dont worry I’ll always find a way to smile 😉 leggo 16 ♡.”
