As the wildfires in Australia have engulfed the continent’s geography, this desperate situation has commanded the attention of many across the globe to provide aid to the people and wildlife affected by this crisis. Many celebrities have since contributed, not only financially, but also by using their platforms to raise awareness and support for those in need.
Singer, Selena Gomez, tweeted, “Absolutely devastated by the fires in Australia. Praying for everyone affected and all of the first responders. I’m making a donation and would love if you would consider doing the same if you can.” She then linked to an article detailing how to make donations.
Singer, Lizzo, also responded to the tragedy on her Instagram describing the effect this “global crisis” has had on her. She later posted for her followers on twitter a list of organizations to contribute to.
Contribution from makeup mogul, Kylie Jenner, came on the heels of backlash from an Instagram story she posted reacting to the devastating news of the Australia wildfires, quickly followed by an unrelated, and seemingly tone deaf post showcasing her $1,480 Louis Vuitton mink fur slippers. After receiving negative attention for these posts, Jenner donated $1 million to various relief efforts.
Jenner’s sister, Kim Kardashian West’s public acknowledgment of the crisis came with controversy as well when she was criticized by a fan for talking about the crisis but not donating to the cause. Kardashian West quickly responded clarifying that just because she does not always publicize her financial contributions to issues doesn’t mean she isn’t donating.
She stated in a tweet, “Nothing gets me more heated than to see people think they know what we donated to and to think we have to publicize everything,” indirectly stating that she has, in fact, contributed some unspecified amount to relief efforts.
Many Australian native celebrities have also taken this tragedy to their social media, including celebrities like Hugh Jackman, Margo Robbie and Nicole Kidman, all pledging to donate as well as publicizing the issue.
Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, generously donated $1 million while also urging fans to contribute as well. Hemsworth said in a video on Instagram, “Hey there guys, as you’re well aware the bushfires in Australia have caused massive devastation. They continue to burn, there’s warmer weather on its way, we’re really still in the thick of it here, as is plenty of challenging times ahead still to come. So, what we need is your support and your donations.”
“That money goes directly to the firefighters, the people on the front lines, the people who have suffered, the communities that have taken a hit and are in desperate need for our support,” he stated regarding his own donation.
“Every dollar counts,” he added, before thanking “everyone who’s sent all their well wishes and donations already. It’s greatly appreciated here in Australia.”
