Ariana Grande takes her iconic ponytail to the world of high fashion in her first ever starring role in a luxury brand’s campaign. Grande announced her partnership with Givenchy on social media with the hashtag, #Arivenchy.
Grande has influenced fashion over the years with her uniquely signature styles, even inspiring terms such as, “lampshading,” in which one wears an oversized shirt or hoodie as a dress, typically paired with thigh high boots. While she has made an impact on fashion almost entirely through her street style, she has never worked with a high fashion brand until now.
The campaign was announced in May with a black and white “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” themed teaser, featuring Grande wearing a little black dress.
For this campaign Grande departed from the Versace aesthetic she had previously adopted, which she can be seen wearing custom pieces from on her Sweetener/Thank You Next tour. She can now be seen swapping those more extravagant styles for more modest and professional looks, in line with the Givenchy brand.
The Givenchy campaign was shot by Craig McDean, with Clare Waight Keller fulfilling the role of creative director.
Waight Keller said in a statement regarding Grande, that Givenchy found “a modern embodiment of its signature spirit: an elegant attitude informed by beauty, individuality, and a sense of empowerment.”
In the campaign Grande can be seen wearing some of the key looks Givenchy’s fall 2019 “Winter of Eden” collection. She can be seen in more geometric and tailored designs which differ from her typically more relaxed aesthetic.
Among the many black and white shots, Grande can be seen in a plethora of earth tones with her signature high ponytail and winged eyeliner, perched on a stool in a position which the brand describes as, “the Givenchy sitting.”
Since the release of the campaign photos, the pop singer has been sharing photos on her social media captioned, “Honored to be your girl and wear these looooks.”
The official statement from Givenchy, announcing the campaign, included from Grande the statement, “I am so proud to be the new face of Givenchy. It is a House I have forever admired and to now be part of that family is such an honor. I love this clothing and the confidence and joy it brings to the people wearing it. Not only is the clothing timeless and beautiful but I’m proud to work with a brand that makes people feel celebrated for who they are, and unapologetic about whatever they want to be.”
The full campaign can be viewed on Givenchy’s website and in the September issue of select magazines.
