Chloe X Halle member, Halle Bailey, has been cast in the coveted role of Ariel in the live-action “The Little Mermaid” by Disney, beating out big names, such as Zendaya who was initially rumored to be taking on the role.
Most know Bailey as half of the R&B duo Chloe X Halle, comprised of Halle and her sister Chloe. The two rose to fame by posting covers on Youtube. The two were eventually discovered by Beyoncé’s and signed to her record label. They even served as the opening act for Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” tour.
In addition to being musically gifted, Bailey also has experience as an actor, appearing on the show “Grownish.” However, “The Little Mermaid” will be Bailey’s feature film debut.
Bailey posted on her shared Twitter account with her sister Chloe, “dream come true…” along with fan art depicting her as the iconic mermaid.
The “Euphoria” star, Zendaya, had been rumored to be taking on the role of Ariel for the last year, surprising many when the casting of Bailey was announced. Zendaya showed public support for Bailey after the news broke, posting on Twitter, “Yeeeeessss!! Here for thiiiissss!! @chloexhalle.”
Bailey responded via Twitter, stating “I LOVE YOU! thank you,” to which Zendaya responded, “Love you more!!! So freakin excited for you.”
Director, Rob Marshall, released the statement regarding the casting decision, “After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.”
Bailey is set to join a cast that includes Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina. It is also rumored that Melissa McCarthy will play Ursula, however the official casting has not been announced.
The film will include the beloved original songs from the 1989 animated version, however original composer Alan Menken and “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda are also producing the film along with Marshall, Marc Platt and John DeLuca.
“The Little Mermaid” will start production in April 2020.
