Clueless Reboot Gets a Mysterious Twist

WRITTEN BY: CECILIE BREE WILKINS

In the age of ‘90s pop-culture resurgence and constant reboots, naturally, the iconic ‘90s classic film, “Clueless” is coming back, but with a twist. This reboot will shift the tone of the original by taking a more “gritty” approach.

CBS TV Studios has taken on “Clueless” with the intention of adapting the film into a dramatic television series with a mystery twist. The reboot focuses on Beverly Hills high schooler Cher Horowitz’s best friend, Dionne, originally played by Stacey Dash, rather than the iconic lead, because the mystery is that Cher has disappeared.

The series logline reads, “a baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latté and Adderall-fueled look at what happens when the high school queen bee Cher disappears and her lifelong No. 2 Dionne steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans. How does Dionne deal with the pressures of being the new most popular girl in school, while also unraveling the mystery of what happened to her best friend, all in a setting that is uniquely 2020 L.A.?”

If you’re wondering what this description will actually look like, the reboot is described as “‘Mean Girls’ meets ‘Riverdale’ meets a Lizzo music video.”

On the production team are “Will & Grace” writers, Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey, the film’s producer is Robert Lawrence and “American Gothic” creator Corinne Brinkerhoff will partner with Lawrence on board as executive producers.

Because the project hasn’t been ordered to pilot yet, little is known about casting, but it is reported that Stacy Dash will reprise her role as Dionne, however Alicia Silverstone was not available to play Cher.

Several of the original cast members from the film, including Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Donald Faison and Breckin Meyer, reunited to celebrate its 25th anniversary in March, causing many to speculate that others besides Dash may come on board the project. However, currently, the reboot is in its early stages.
