3 Ways To Reach Out When You Are Struggling

Written By: Mary Lucas

Mental Health Awareness Month is over, but that doesn’t mean we should stop talking about it. Here are three ways to reach out to someone when you are struggling.

  1. Be social, even if it means just showing up.

I know what it feels like to want to isolate yourself. To not show anyone that you are hurt and broken. It feels like that is the best thing to do. I’m learning that it’s not. Get together with people you love and who love you, and do something fun. Being around the people you care about can help take your mind off of the things you are feeling, even just for a little while. Even if you are not participating in the activity or conversation, it will help to be in an environment where you’re not stuck in your thoughts.

  1. Think of people who you could reach out to, even in a small way.

I have people in my life tell me again & again ‘I’m here for you if you ever want to talk.’ Do I ever take them up on it? No. I don’t want to come across as a burden by laying all my problems on them. I’m telling you this because there are people in your life who want to be there for you.  Maybe it’s the friendship that’s slowly forming. Perhaps it’s that person you’ve wanted to connect with. Perhaps it’s your best friend or sister.  You just have to listen and step out of your comfort zone.

  1. Open up to other people about your feelings — the good, the bad and everything in between.

Being authentic and vulnerable with others is hard. Expressing our true feelings with others can bring connection; we see that we share so much more beyond the surface. Our fears and insecurities are intertwined by our past, present and future. Don’t rely on yourself to get better; Don’t be afraid to seek treatment. Seeking a professional, taking medication, or any other method of help is not a sign of weakness.
