The 2019 VMAs aired on MTV featuring performances from top artists, however this year the VMAs reached record low viewership. The Hollywood Reporter reported that for the third year in a row, ratings have declined, with this year’s ratings at 1.93 million viewers, down 14% from last year’s.
While official ratings have declined, public interest hasn’t, with highlights from the night making headlines. This means that many aren’t necessarily watching the VMAs, but are instead keeping up on social media. With that in mind, here are the best performances of the night that you maybe didn’t see but should definitely know about:
Taylor Swift opened the VMAs with a colorful performance of her new song, “You Need To Calm Down” then followed it up with a more stripped down performance of her new song “Lover.”
New couple, Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes, gave a steamy performance of their shared single, “Señorita.”
The Jonas Brothers performed a “Sucker” and “Only Human” medley from their hometown venue outside to the Asbury Park stage.
Lil Nas X surprisingly did not perform his hit song “Old Town Road,” instead giving a colorful and futuristic performance of his song “Panini.”
Fifth Harmony’s Normani gave an impeccably choreographed, basketball themed performance of her new solo track, “Motivation.”
Lizzo gave an energetic and vibrant performance of her songs, “Truth Hurts” and “Good as Hell,” featuring a full choir.
Missy Elliott, who was the recipient of the Video Vanguard award gave the most complex and theatrical performance of the night, performing “Throw it Back,” “The Rain,” “Hot Boyz,” “Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It,” “Pass That Dutch,” and “Lose Control.” She referenced her past iconic videos throughout her performance, even bringing out Alyson Stoner, the little girl from the “Work It” music video, who is now an adult, to perform with her.
