While the world waited for the season seven premiere of Game of Thrones with an anticipation that doesn’t quite resonate with the anticipation that surrounds anything else on the big or small screen, HBO’s phenomenon hit wasn’t the only show with an upcoming premiere that week. HBO’s Insecure and Emmy-nominated Ballers were touring ahead of their respective second and third seasons.  On July 13th they came to Charlotte, North Carolina with TRAP Karaoke to exclusively screen the season premiere of each show.

Held at the Music Factory in NoDa, VIP guests enjoyed mingling during a catered cocktail hour, complete with a bar, make-up station, a painter showcasing her work of the Charlotte skyline, and complimentary t-shirts, before the screenings began and ran back-to-back.

Ballers, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as former football star Spencer Strasmore, follows Spencer on his journey to become just as successful as a financial manager for rookie and veteran athletes alike. Series stars Jazmyn Simon (Julie Greane) and Donovan W. Carter (Vernon Littlefield) were both in attendance to promote the current season. Between various romances and a look at the business side to the sport’s world, there’s something for everyone waiting to be found between the title cards, but if the crowd was receptive to Ballers, the atmosphere was downright electric for Insecure.  Starring Issa Rae, Yvonne Orji, and Amanda Seales among others, Insecure follows the modern day, everyday highs, lows, and awkward moments of an African-American woman. Each show maintains that raw lens that leaves little about life to the imagination—something HBO is fond of—and there was something so relatable and human about seeing Issa Dee cycling through outfits in an attempt to find the perfect one that set Insecure apart.

I’d never seen either of these shows, but they’ve been added to my HBO watch list, and should be added to yours, too!
